GOUV'AIRNANCE start of the project (France, Spain, Lebanon, Jordan)

January 25, 2012 will mark the official start of the cooperation project GOUV'AIRNANCE Mediterranean. This project aims to reduce urban air pollution in the Mediterranean by the establishment of means of measurement and integrated territorial governance of air quality in four Mediterranean metropolises.

Air pollution has devastating environmental and health especially direct. In 1997, the World Health Organization estimated that air pollution was 400 000 people worldwide each year. We observe an increase everywhere in respiratory disorders. Air pollution is also an aggravating factor of global warming on which the greatest scientists agree today that the cause is emissions of greenhouse gases from human activity.

In all Mediterranean countries, governments have failed to overcome the lack of integrated management of air quality, that is to say, articulating it to other major issues of governance Urban: energy, transport, climate. This issue of governance also refers to a lack of awareness of the issue of air quality in populations of the territories but also within local executives and national leaders.

GOUV'AIRNANCE is funded with EUR 1.78 million euros (of a total budget of 000 euros in 1950) by the European Commission under the neighborhood policy in the Mediterranean.

GOUV'AIRNANCE will particularly value the expertise and especially French Marseillaise through the participation of the Institute of the Mediterranean as a project coordinator, the city of Marseilles and the PACA ATMO Association will bring its experience in matter.
